Caroline Kennedy spoke on her fathers achievements on his 50th Anniversary of Inauguration. She states that her father "redefined our idea of what it means to be a citizen" as they opened the special exhibits at the Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston, that has the handwritten draft of Kennedy's inaugural address and the family Bible on which he was sworn in.
I obviously dont know much about JFK because I wasnt born around those times. I can only go off by what I was taught in school and documentaries which mainly talked about how he was the youngest president elected and he was one of the presidents assassinated. However, I was taught through my family that JFK tried to improve racial issues in the USA during the 1960s.
President Obama stated on his 50th Anniversary, "Though the country faces different challenges today, we cannot forget we are the heirs of this president who showed us what was possible. Because of that vision, I can stand here today as president of the United States."
It is truly a sad story about the young presidents death and how it occured in such a public area. The USA has tendencies of not taking more precautions with events until something dramatic happens.
Kennedy had a very great impact on the nation, not just his assassination but how he reached to his fellow Americans. His famous quote "ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country" touched not just the US but the world.
We all know the "stories" within his family and affairs but at the end of the day, he was one of the most deared president of our nation. With this anniversary, you can tell how many Americans miss, appreciate and respect JFK.
It truly is amazing that on the 50th anniversary of JFK's death, we have our first black president. JFK fought for these types of rights. He would be so proud if he knew how far our nation has come as a whole. I like the quote you use from Caroline Kennedy. JFK did indeed change our perspective of the American citizen. He urged us to partake in anything and everything that could potentially better our nation. I wish that our generation could have experienced his presidency.
ReplyDeleteHe really did change perspective of US citizens, and its sad that a lot of people only remember him due to the assassination. We have come along way from him putting effort for African Americans in the 1960s to having a black president now. People always complain about the government and what not, but i wouldnt want to live anywhere else haha!
